Walz, hailing from West Point, Nebraska, began his career as a social studies teacher, football coach, and union member before entering politics. He served in Congress for six terms, advocating for veterans issues, having spent 24 years in the Army National Guard. In 2018, he won the governorship with the campaign theme of “One Minnesota.”
During his first term as governor, Walz navigated a divided legislature but saw success with progressive legislation. However, the COVID-19 pandemic strained bipartisan cooperation as he utilized emergency powers to manage the crisis. Despite challenges, Walz won reelection in 2022 amid a significant budget surplus.
