In August 2024, Python has achieved its highest popularity rating ever, reaching 18.04% in Tiobe’s index of programming language popularity. This milestone makes Python the first language to hit the 18% mark since Java in November 2016. However, Java still holds the all-time highest rating in the index at 26.49% in June 2001.
Python has solidified its position as the top language in the index, claiming the number one spot since October 2021. According to Paul Jansen, CEO of software quality company Tiobe, this rise in popularity is due to the high demand for software engineers and Python being the most user-friendly mature general-purpose programming language available. As a result, many beginners in the field start their programming journey with Python.
The latest index for August 2024, published on August 4th, shows Python leading by eight points over second-place C++, which has a rating of 10.04%. Additionally, the Rust language, which recently achieved its highest ranking at 13th place, dropped to 14th place in the August index. Despite this drop, Jansen reassures that Rust is expected to rise again in the following month.
