Dealing with Age and Weight “Jokes” in the Workplace
A concerned reader writes in about a sensitive workplace issue:
As a manager overseeing supervisors, I recently witnessed two team members making disrespectful remarks about one of our supervisors’ weight and age. The supervisor had shared with me her efforts to address her weight and is around the same age as me. While she appeared to brush off the comments, I found them unacceptable. Should I confront the individuals directly or address the entire office about the inappropriateness of such comments? I want to address this issue tactfully without causing conflict.
I provide insights on this query and more in my latest article on Inc., where I revisit past letters and offer updated responses. You can access the article here.
